I think sometimes you are scared to be who you are. I think you are focused on issues  that have no bearing on your life. I think you do not have enough confidence in yourself. I think you forget that we have a limited time on this earth. I think you worry too much. I think you get offended to easily. 

I think you forget how powerful we are.

I think you are AMAZING!! I think you add value to to the lives of those who are around you. I think your influence reaches further than you think. I think you are wonderful. I think you are wealthy. I think you are blessed. I think Gods connection gets stronger everyday. I think you are talented. I think you are a genius. I think you are LOVE! I think you are AWESOME!!!

Scandal – Billy The Kid – Black Men Speak

I was not sure what direction Scandal was going in. After the assassination attempt on Fitz I wasn’t sure if Shondra would be able to top the suspense and intrigue of that specific story line. However as I have mentioned on numerous occasions she is a masterful writer and last night’s episode proves why FB and Twitter feeds are off the chain every Thursday.

**NO SPOILER ALERT…Kind of**

I am going to tred lightly regarding who the mole is because I’m not sure who is reading this. From personal experience I hate to know what’s going to happen before I see it. My initial suspicions of Charlie being the mole were only half right. Olivia and her Gladiators, Cyrus and the White House staff were all stumped. Out of the shadows comes this character who holds the Defiance disk and will most definitely be the bain of everyone’s existence next season. When you find out who the mole is you will flip and you may have to back track a little.

When I first got into this Phenomenon known as Scandal I was extremely curious as to why the show was so popular and why my FB timeline was hijacked every Thursday. I became a fan instantly. However I have my reservations about the writing. With all the glitz and glamour that is Olivia Pope this story essentially focuses on a woman who is in the midst of a love triangle. At this point it might be a square or a polygon.

It does concern me a little that this powerful woman of color is involved in this relationship where she essentially is the “side-piece”. To be honest the story line is not that simple, however on the surface Olivia is involved with a married man and by most accounts this behavior is immoral and objectifies her.

When it comes to Scandal fans I would not fit the usual demographic. I have even seen posts on FB that say “If you are a man watching Scandal go kill yourself.” That’s harsh. Lately I have been seeing a surge of Black men who have so much commentary about a show they don’t know much about. Many take issue with the fact that Olivia is giving these “side chicks” hope and that she is running into the arms of these white men and that it’s not ok.

This whole Thomas Jefferson sleeping with his slave girl narrative has some truth to it. I must admit that Olivia does get on my nerves at times. She dumped the brother to run into the arms of this married man. It can seem extremely ridiculous.

I am not one who discounts the power of the media over the people. The videos we watch and the music that we listen to affect us on a deep level. In “Post Racial America” this type of story line should not be an issue, but its causing a stir among the brothers. Depending on how you look at it it could be good and bad. I happen to think we can learn a great deal from it.

Good Of The Friday – Some Haitian Tradition

Traditionally in Haitian Households Good Friday is celebrated by a feast of different fish and salads….I remember when I was young I asked my friend Nate Hampton if he new what Good Friday was…he looked at me and said “The Good of the Friday” HA!! I always thought that was hilarious. Now I know it’s true.

Whats Really Going On!? What is Right With Us!?

Tuesday was such a strange day. I wake up and check my facebook and all I see are pictures of this beautiful infant who is six months old.

This child is yet another victim of this rising murder rate in Chicago. I make a concerted effort to avoid this news because of how it makes me feel. I feel like we are being attacked by negativity everyday and not watching the news is not enough anymore. We have to shield ourselves from a constant barrage of bad news.  Fast Forward >>>>>>>>>>

So…. Im at work Tuesday and its just like any other day. Im helping customers and kind of going through the motions, just another day. Of course my co-workers are discussing this horrible tragedy that I have been trying to avoid and I try my best not to comment on it. I never do.

The day continues…faxing…answering the phones…being corporate….work. Occasionally I may hear someone speaking on their cell, sometimes they talk LOUD!! Today this “young lady” was in the vestibule talking REALLY LOUD and saying every curse word you could think of to whomever she was having a conversation with.

Security approaches her and asks her to step outside if she is going to speak so loudly…She calls him a name and then says F U as she goes outside. Then she comes back in as if she is about to be serviced. She was escorted out.

I’ve had conversations with many people concerning this energy that people seem to be emanating. For some reason it seems as though negativity is fighting for its life and   people seem to gravitate towards it so easily. Why is it like this?

The reason I blog is to speak my mind and represent a voice that is working to turn the tides and tip the scales when it comes to how powerful we truly are. It is up to us to make a choice and not buy into this low energy.

Speak words of power, be kind to people, embrace the spirit of love.

When you pay to much attention to media in general you will be bombarded with BS. Its time to be selective and deliberate. Speak Life Into This World and see the world Change. We are blessed. Thats right.

Whats Good World!!!!

Welcome to the ninth topic in this series entitled What Ladies Love.

Its been a while since I posted anything with respect to this series because I have been sooooo busy, however IM BACK!!! If you would like to read the previous post you can click here. We got some good feedback from that one. Now lets get to it.

Last night I finally got around to watching ‘Silver Linings Playbook” after much belly aching because of the snub “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Quvenzhané Wallis received from the academy. I got over it and decided to see why the academy chose Jennifer Lawrence as best actress and why people where so into this movie.

If I were to judge a book by it cover or rather the posters used to advertise this movie, I would have dismissed this as a date movie. The only reason I had any level of interest was due to an interview Bradley Cooper the lead character did on “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross on Npr. The story seemed to have some more depth, so I dived in.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Bradley Cooper’s character Pat Solitano is released from a mental illness facility that he was placed in because of an episode he had after coming home and finding his wife in the shower with another man. In my opinion he reacted just as I would expect any husband to react when he catches his wife sleeping with another man. HE BEATS THE SHIT OUT OF HIM!!

Whats interesting about this is that Pat leaves the facility intent on getting back with his wife. He says he has grown as a person, he lost weight and he has learned that in all the experiences in life it is best to stay positive and find that “Silver Lining” He meets Jennifer Lawrence’s character Tiffany who is a widow and as a result has become this promiscuous woman about town. They initially bond over their experiences with familiar medications.

Pat’s dad played by Robert De Niro is a Philadelphia Eagles fan who is banned from the stadium because of all the fights he got into and he is highly superstitious and says Pat brings him good luck during the Eagles games and that he should stay and watch them with him, and he is OCD. Each one of the characters has this quirk that defines them. It made me want to examine this a bit deeper.

I can really relate to Pat and his desire to get back with his wife. I remember when I was fresh into my separation  I thought that if I could change some things, focus more on what I wasn’t doing before and become a better person that my wife would take me back. I just knew that she loved me and that we could overcome any and all obstacles. I was out of work so i found a job. Then I discover that she is pregnant with another mans child. This almost destroyed me.

I watched the scene in the movie where Pat catches his wife and could see myself in that same position. I’m happy I wasn’t in that position cause Im sure it wouldn’t have had such a happy ending. Now…does the fact that I would have possibly reacted the same way make me mentally ill?

I am kinda of shortening the scope of Pats illness, he was dealing with it all of his life and that specific moment he snapped. Tiffany lost her husband a Police Officer suddenly while he was trying to rekindle the spark in their marriage, as a result she became promiscuos and was given medication to help deal with her depression.

The way I see it all of us have this capacity to be considered mentally ill based on our quirks and how some people may perceive us. The one thing I got out of this movie was that each and every character was dealing with some type of stress that affected who they were mentally.

As much as this movie is about mental illness, it is mostly about overcoming it. Pat embraced positivity and exercise and believing that having hope works. Tiffany represented that extra push…that voice of raw truth that all of us need. Jennifer Lawrence did an Awesome job with her character. I still think Quvenzhané Wallis should have won…lol

Now…with all that being said…I want to ask… Are all of us mentally ill/crazy and can it be overcome? Share your experience. I would love to read what you think. :-)

Whats Good World!!!

Welcome to the eighth topic in this series entitled What Ladies Love.

The question previous to this one was “If a dress could describe your personality, would you be a black mini, a pinstriped business suit or a ball gown?” Explain. There were some great descriptions with respect to this question and so many of you seem so versatile in terms of who you are. Thats a good thing.

This weeks question is sure to spark a spirited discussion.

Is it ever ok to date someone who is married?

I have been married and I have ben unfaithful. When I was doing this I knew it was wrong but I had suspicions that happened to be right. However even though I was right in my suspicion it still did not make it right for me to be unfaithful. My feelings at this point in my development are pretty cut and dry. I would never date anyone who is married. Karma is real and why tamper with someone else’s union.

I posed this question at my job and I got one answer that was quite compelling. My co-worker said that if either spouse was terminally ill and they spoke about not being able to meet each others emotional and physical needs that it would be ok to go elsewhere to have those needs fulfilled. I thought that was an interesting perspective.

Django Unchained – Spike Takes A Stand

People who have known me for quite some time know I am a huge fan of Spike Lee. Most of my favorite movies are Spike Lee joints. In my opinion Spike Lee does amazing work when it comes to filmmaking. He also does an amazing job at telling the story of African Americans from all different facets of life. So when I was watching an interview he did with Vibe earlier this week the interviewer asked Spike if he would speak on the new Quentin Tarantino movie Django Unchained his response resonated with me.

He said: “I can’t speak on it …I’m not gonna see it. I’m not seeing it. All I’m gonna say is it would be disrespectful to my ancestors to see that movie. I can’t disrespect my ancestors. Now that’s me. I’m not speaking on behalf of anybody but myself.”

I respect Spike as a filmmaker. I appreciate his candor. He rarely ever holds his tongue. I understood his response. I understand the seriousness of recognizing our ancestors and honoring them. His response almost compelled me to take a similar position. However I was intrigued and wanted to see how Quentin Tarantino would approach this story of a slave getting revenge.Image

There will be NO SPOILERS in this review. If you are expecting some super political extra emotional movie about the African Holocaust/Slavery, this is definitely not the movie for you. Quentin stays true to form. He delivers the story of Django in the form of a spaghetti western. What’s most interesting about this film are the moments when the audience is left to decide if they should laugh or be offended. Leonardo De’Caprio and Samuel Jackson play their parts to perfection.

ImageI appreciate the way Jamie Foxx approached the character. There is a sense of dignity that he manages to maintain in the midst of this film that makes it quite believable. I couldn’t stop looking at Kerry Washington without thinking about Olivia Pope…HA!.. Sorry…I wonder how she is gonna help Huck out of this latest jam…….ANYWAY…Overall it was a very good film but the depth of my experience was realized after the movie was over.

As I walk out of the theater there is this feeling of…”What did I just watch?” Another thing that I noticed was the eye contact I was getting from other black men as if they had felt the same way that I did. I could tell who just saw Django by the look they had on their faces.

The story of The African Holocaust/Slavery in ImageAmerica has NEVER truly been dealt with. I know why Spike Lee feels the way that he does. Ultimately this is a movie. The last person I would expect to tell the story of The African Holocaust/Slavery properly would be Quentin Tarantino. With that being said I look forward to Spike Lee providing us with something that will speak to the hearts of the world, evoke change and restore the sense of dignity we have lost in our community. It is up to us to tell our stories.

We were free before freedom was given to us.

Oh Yeah…I give “Django Unchained” 4 stars out of 5. :-)

Whats Good World!!!

Welcome to the seventh topic in this series entitled What Ladies Love.

Last weeks question was “How do you know when the person you are with is the one?“Everyone has their own perspective as to who “The One” is. One thing I notice is that as individuals many of us have so many requirements or expectations when it comes to others. However the truest source of our happiness is within us. It matters how we see ourselves. What makes us who we are? Are we just one way or are there many facets to who we are?

The questions have been very general as of late, however this segment is called What Ladies Love. In the spirit of staying true to this segment I present you with this weeks question. “If a dress could describe your personality, would you be a black mini, a pinstriped business suit or a ball gown? Explain. (Don’t feel like you are restricted to these choices.)

Renee said: “Ok, I’m like a chameleon with styles. A business suit could be the better, although I’d be comfortable in all picks.”

Nakisha said: “The black mini represents my youthfulness and playfulness. I am a fun loving girl. That down to earth girl, I got your back your back girl. My ball gown is my mature womanhood. I am wife, mom and whatever my man desires of me. The pinstripe suit is the “I will kick your ass with my knowledge, conversation peace of mind and stamina side of me.”

Robyn said: “I would be a sundress, because they are sexy without even trying.”

Ebonie said: “If I was to have a dress that would describe me it would actually be a pinstripe suit mini skirt with an exquisite blouse underneath the suit blazer jacket. I say this because I wear so many hats. I’m a woman of diversity. I do so many things like most women do. We play so many roles in the lives of people around us and still have the time to look good, feel good even with that S on her chest. I can adapt and blend in anywhere, anytime at any moment.”

Now since I’m a guy…I would say that the best way to describe my personality is urban business casual. I think I just coined a new term…HA! I consider my personality all encompassing, meaning I’m not one particular way all the time. I think that’s the beauty of being alive. Our experiences help to shape who we are and our perspective. I feel as though when we are being who we truly are at all times that it will always align us with the right people. Now tell me what you think. Leave a comment below.
