BREAKING: PART 1 ON MY CONVERSATION WITH CHI TOWNS OWN PRECISE CHECK IT OUT RIGHT NOW! TWTTV
I wasn’t really sure what to expect when it came to this movie. When it comes to movies that have the intention of telling the story of the African American Holocaust/Slavery I find that something always seems to be missing. The depictions are watered down. “The Butler” which is a great movie is an example of this. The African American Holocaust/Slavery and Civil Rights can not be summed up in stock videos and a few pictures of Harriet Tubman and Dr King. It is a complex, layered, and gruesome history that must be told in its totality.
“12 Years A Slave” does an exceptional job at pulling the curtain back on the history of America when it comes to its mired past.
**SPOILER ALERT (Not really)**
“12 Years A Slave” is based on a true story from the 1853 biography of Solomon Northup. Solomon Northup played by Chiwetel Ejiofor was a FREE BLACK MAN from Sarasota Springs New York, who was kidnapped while he was in Washington DC in 1841 and was sold into slavery. He spent 12 yrs as a slave.
There were a few scenes that stood out. One scene in particular involved Solomon who was renamed Platt after he became a slave. William Ford his master at the time was having difficulty moving lumber down the narrow Indian Creek in Louisiana. Platt explained to him that he could build log rafts and use those to ship his lumber down the creek. As he was giving his explanation one of the overseers Tibeats was looking extremely confused and jealous because of Platt’s extensive knowledge. William Ford looks at Tibeats and explains how he is impressed with Platt’s knowledge. Tibeats turns to Platt and asks him “Are you an engineer or a nigger?”
That specific question resonated with me specifically because of the hyper racial society we live in now.
Solomon/Platt maintained a dignity that seems to be lacking in our society today.
In 2013 we have people who are comfortable with being called and labeled niggers. We are bombarded with buffoonery. Many times the worst examples of who we are broadcast throughout the world as a representation of our culture.
It’s time to draw a line in the sand.
When I tell people Im a rapper I get a look from them….a confused look. :-/ They may say “You don’t look like a rapper.” or ” Where is all of your jewelry?”. I could go on and on with the assumptions and judgements people make with respect to me being a rapper, but that would take up my entire post.
I come from a school of thought that understands the ability that all of us have as human beings. I represent a culture that at its best is truly the voice of who we are. We educate, we learn, we have fun and influence the world.
I feel like Hip Hop has been enslaved for the past 20+ years and its time to free ourselves. We must never forget who we are. We can never forget our purpose.
Our purpose is to change the world.
I am a Rapper not a nigger.
Who are you?

When it comes to this blog my intention is to share my experience and provide something uplifting and positive for the mass. The past month has been a whirlwind when it comes to what is happening in the news. The way that the news is reported via television and the internet is extremely immediate. Everyone has an opinion as to what is right or wrong. So much of what is reported in sensational and tends to spark discussions that are impassioned and driven by emotion. Generally I strive to stay away from these type of discussions. I am in the process of retraining my mind body and soul. In order to maintain a sense of peace and balance I work to feed myself things that add to the awesomeness that the creator has blessed us with.
Fruitvale Station is an amazing movie starring Michael B Jordan in the role of Oscar Grant. Oscar Grant was shot on the mass transit platform by an Oakland Police officer while being detained New Years Day 2009. The murder of Oscar Grant prompted riots and demonstrations that ultimately led to the resignation of the police chief and a 2 year prison term for the officer who killed Oscar. The Officer only served 11 months.
After watching the movie I was moved to tears. I knew what happened already however as with many of these type of stories when they are told in 140 characters or less or on the nightly news something is always missing. The spirit and soul of the person who lost his/her life is hardly ever focused on. These young men are loosing their lives. They have families and loved ones. They are human. Michael B Jordan’s portrayal of Oscar Grant reminds the world of this.

The release of this movie was timely. In light of George Zimmerman who killed Trayvon Martin but was found innocent because of the Stand Your Ground law in the state of Florida.
I didn’t watch the proceedings up until the last few minutes when the words innocent rang through the courtroom. I was shocked. During the trial I would check my Facebook feed and notice how attention was being focused on Trayvon’s friend, on how Trayvon looked his drug usage and other issues that have nothing to do with why he was murdered. His life was taken and it feels as though no justice was given. He was a young man with his life in front of him. He had family and friends who love him. He was human.

The media is all around us and is embedded in every facet of our lives. It is not some benign force that does not affect change. Used properly it can change lives and change the world. In this shift that is happening in our universe in this moment there seems to be a determined focus on those things that do not promote our good.
More specifically black men are being portrayed as heartless, uneducated and hopeless individuals.
Whenever I tell people I am from Chicago these days I get “The Questions”. They ask me… “Whats going on in Chicago?” “Are you scared for your life?” “Are you going to move?”
Most of these people only know what they are being fed in the media. Chicago is NOT the war zone that people will have you believe. The youth have not lost their minds. They are warriors for change with limited direction. There is a lack of focus as to what is causing this violence. The focus is on the killing and not the change. In the midst of all of this The “Concealed Carry” Law was just implemented in Illinois.
In the midst of this killing among our youth one of the most powerful tools of the media is being used to promote the lifestyle that is adding the dehumanization of black men throughout the world. Poverty is being exploited and our youth who are looking for a way out are providing the mass with what the media wants.
Music specifically Rap Music and the culture of Hip Hop has been hijacked and is being used as a tool drive our young men into free labor. Its not a secret. Its hidden in plain sight.
A portrait is being painted of our youth that is not true. They are not savages. They have SOULS!

Let me ask you a question. How many of you would knowingly allow your spouse to engage in an extra marital affair? Ok..Another question for you…How many of you would stay in a marriage when it is clear that you do not love your spouse? Ok here is another question…What do Jaccquline Onasis Kennedy and Mellie Grant have in common?
Bellamy Young is the extremely talented actress who plays the wife of Fitzgerald Grant on the hit ABC television show SCANDAL. Her pedigree is that of an Ivy Leaguer. She holds 2 degrees from Yale. She has a degree in English and a degree in theater studies. She followed her passion for the theatre and parlayed it into roles along side Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames. If we look at the surface of her upbringing if would not be a stretch to say that she could have been easily groomed to be a First Lady.
Bellamy provides different levels to the character of Mellie. Mellie is the first lady of the United States who was essentially married off to Fitz because of the relationship he had with Fitz’s father. It was an arranged marriage and Mellie has been groomed for this all of her life. She does an amazing job with the press and the American people, but guess what….I CAN’T STAND MELLIE!!!
I want to sympathize with this woman who on the surface has her husbands back and is on the tail end of this love triangle. She has a child thinking it would bring her and her husband closer together, but Fitz is looking for the mysteries of the universe between Olivia magical thighs.
That should be enough for me to feel for her. It doesn’t feel good to be cheated on and its being flaunted in your face…dang…I should feel sorry for this woman…but I don’t.
Mellie sees this as part of the design. She helped conspire to get Fitz in Office and she loves being the First Lady. She wishes to keep this status and has her own aspirations of becoming President. It’s these aspirations and attitude that cause her to do some bone headed stuff. Im always left looking at Mellie like…Dang…you get on my nerves.
Mellie is robotic in her approach at times its as though she does not have any feelings. She outed her husband on national Tv and told the world he was having an affair. She is looking for sympathy from the American people. I would assume from the media level that she receives this sympathy. However the viewer gets to see this conniving and callous woman up close and personal. We see that she really does not love her husband. We know that she has other intentions. I think this is why people root for Olivia so much.
There are moments when you can see glimpses of some type of connection between Mellie and Fitz. The moment right before he gets shot she spills her heart out to him and the very last scene of last season Fitz after being jilted by his mistress.
So this is what I think is going happen. I think Mellie takes Fitz back under the condition that he tells the American public that he has been sleeping with a man. Then Mellie Divorces him and makes her run for the presidency. She wins the presidency and marries Olivias ex beau Edison and makes him First Man. Yeah…that could happen. But maybe not…LOL!!
I asked a series of questions at the beginning of this post answer them for me. Im curious to know your thoughts.
Do you feel sorry for Mellie? What do you like about her? What don’t you like about her. I want to know. Leave a comment, like and share. :-)

So…today I keep seeing Kerry Washington’s name in my twitter feed. And Im like…Why is Kerry Washington’s name in my twitter feed so much? Well seems as though Kerry has been nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Olivia Pope on SCANDAL.
She has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series. I haven’t seen any of the other nominees shows but I know Kerry will win cause she’s better than all of them. HA!
Congrats Ms. Washington. :-)
This is the second time since I have been writing SCANDAL-LESS Thursdays that Olivia/Kerry has tried to interfere with my subject matter. The first time she was successful, but NOT this time.
President Fitzgerald Grant as portrayed by Tony Goldwyn has become the most beloved adulterer in the history of adulterers since President Bill Clinton. Tony has managed to craft a character that can do the most horrendous things and still manages to have the women swooning over him. HOW DOES HE DO THAT?!!!
The ladies go crazy over Fitz. He sleeps with other women. He cheats on his wife. He jeopardizes the lives of the American people and he can do no wrong because he loves Olivia so much. **side eye**
I guess ultimately we are all looking for that perfect love even if sometimes they belong to someone else…WOW…did I just type that…HA!
Tony does a great job bringing Fitz to life. There has even been discussion of him becoming the next James Bond. What do you think about that?
I want to see how he manages to get Fitz back into the good graces of his wife since Olivia kicked him to the curb.
SCANDAL returns October 3, 2013 so we don’t have to wait long to see the media frenzy that awaits Fitz, Olivia and Mellie. Actually…October is pretty far away…DANG!! :-(
What I think happens is that Fitz denies everything. He tells the press he never had sexual relations with Olivia and then there is a bunch of talk about cigars and a blue dress….Uhh..Wait that happened already. Maybe the conversations are about coke cans and pubic hairs. I don’t know.
What do you thinks is going to happen. Why do the ladies love Fitz so much. Leave a comment, like and share the blog. I want to know what you think. :-)
