A Tribe Called Quest delivers classic material for last album

“Got to get it together forever got to get it together for brothers, got to get it together for sisters, for mothers and fathers and dead niggas, for non conformers one hitter quitters for Tyson types and Che figures. Let’s make something happen.”

The world has shifted and we got exactly what we needed to lift us. A Tribe Called Quest dropped a new album after 18 years. The quote mentioned above is from the first song off the release We Got It From Here … Thank You 4 Your Service called “Space Program”. The words are a call to action to a segment of the community who felt crippled and damaged after the current election cycle. It’s a shot in the arm a reminder that the mission for improvement and freedom is not over with.

To say that this album was highly anticipated is an understatement. This release continues a trend of amazing music that has dropped in 2016. In March of this year one of the members of the group Malik Issac Taylor aka Phife passed away from complications with diabetes at the age of 45. It was a blow to the hip hop community. Hearing his voice on the project is somber, fulfilling and amazing. When Q-Tip mentioned that the album was coming he made it a point to mention that these were not not old Phife bars “No this isn’t filled with old Phife bars…this is that pure, unstepped on pure.”said Q-Tip

That is the best description of this project. It is pure in a way that the production and the verses are nurturing to the soul. Jarobi White who has been called the glue of the crew and plays the background laces a few tracks with rhymes no one was expecting and son got skills yo! Andre 3000 , Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes Consequence, Talib Kweli, Jack White, Anderson Paak, Elton John and Kanye West add their voices to the project. As diverse as this guest list is you never get the sense that this is not a Tribe album. The track Mobius featuring Consequence and Busta Rhymes has no original Tribe members on it but it still feels like Tribe.

It’s refreshing to hear real voices with annunciation, definition and substance. All the tracks are produced by Tribe as a unit. This is fitting being that this is their sixth and final studio album that includes all of their original members. “Lost Somebody” is an ode to Phife and celebrates his life as Q-Tip and Jarobi lament over their relationship with their brother. Q-Tip and Phife issues were very public and on some level caused for the the group to break up. Q-Tip admits to being overbearing and appreciates the fact that they were always honest with each other and never pretended.

We Got It From Here … Thank You 4 Your Service triggers an emotion that seems to have been untapped in rap music as of late. Knowing that Phife is no longer with us and status that Tribe holds in the world of hip hop makes this album more meaningful. Hip hop heads are rejoicing all around the world right now because Tribe delivered a classic right on time.

LIVE YOUR LIFE NOW! – Tis The Season

Image

As I write this I can feel my self breathing and I am grateful. Each breath is a reminder that I am capable of changing my circumstance in this moment.

During this time of year many of us find ourselves assessing it. We may think about what has gone right, what has gone wrong and what we can do better. Self reflection opens us up to the possibilities of what can be.

The power of transformation and the ability to be happy rests inside of all of us. We are connected to the universe in a way that will spark change. We have to believe.

The creator has not given us life in error. We have purpose. We must be bold enough to act on it. Many of us spend too much time focused on the “bad” things. Sometimes we allow negative thoughts to spark an emotion that can leave us stagnant. We have power over these thought. We have dominion.

I challenge you to love, to project abundance and change your circumstance and the world.

This is my intention going into the new year. I am eliminating fear and doubt and replacing those thoughts with love, good health, prosperity and abundance.

We have been blessed with these lives to live to the fullest. We should be happy. We should be carefree. We should love.

Live your life NOW!!

Stay Focused, Positive and Productive

Are you a Rapper or a Nigger? – 12 Years A Slave

12-Years-A-Slave-Movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when it came to this movie. When it comes to movies that have the intention of telling the story of the African American Holocaust/Slavery I find that something always seems to be missing. The depictions are watered down. “The Butler” which is a great movie is an example of this. The African American Holocaust/Slavery and Civil Rights can not be summed up in stock videos and a few pictures of Harriet Tubman and Dr King. It is a complex, layered, and gruesome history that must be told in its totality.

“12 Years A Slave” does an exceptional job at pulling the curtain back on the history of America when it comes to its mired past.

**SPOILER ALERT (Not really)**

“12 Years A Slave” is based on a true story from the 1853 biography of Solomon Northup. Solomon Northup played by Chiwetel Ejiofor was a FREE BLACK MAN from Sarasota Springs New York, who was kidnapped while he was in Washington DC in 1841 and was sold into slavery. He spent 12 yrs as a slave.

There were a few scenes that stood out. One scene in particular involved Solomon who was renamed Platt after he became a slave. William Ford his master at the time was having difficulty moving lumber down the narrow Indian Creek in Louisiana. Platt explained to him that he could build log rafts and use those to ship his lumber down the creek. As he was giving his explanation one of the overseers Tibeats was looking extremely confused and jealous because of Platt’s extensive knowledge. William Ford looks at Tibeats and explains how he is impressed with Platt’s knowledge. Tibeats turns to Platt and asks him “Are you an engineer or a nigger?”

12-years-a-slave-paul-dano-600That specific question resonated with me specifically because of the hyper racial society we live in now.

Solomon/Platt maintained a dignity that seems to be lacking in our society today.

In  2013 we have people who are comfortable with being called and labeled niggers. We are bombarded with buffoonery. Many times the worst examples of who we are broadcast throughout the world as a representation of our culture.

It’s time to draw a line in the sand.

filesWhen I tell people Im a rapper I get a look from them….a confused look. :-/ They may say “You don’t look like a rapper.” or ” Where is all of your jewelry?”. I could go on and on with the assumptions and judgements people make with respect to me being a rapper, but that would take up my entire post.

I come from a school of thought that understands the ability that all of us have as human beings. I represent a culture that at its best is truly the voice of who we are. We educate, we learn, we have fun and influence the world.

I feel like Hip Hop has been enslaved for the past 20+ years and its time to free ourselves. We must never forget who we are. We can never forget our purpose.

Our purpose is to change the world.

I am a Rapper not a nigger.

Who are you?

Rick Ross – Precise Fitness – Oct 1st Challenge – New Year – Health

Image

“Yo…whats up Rick Ross!!” said some random woman “Yeah Man I see you Rick Rossin it over there!” said some random guys on a street corner while I was walking down the street with a young lady. “6 Piece, Mild Sauce..aint got not bread…bitch I got coleslaw…bitch I got coleslaw!!”….HA! The last one is a knock off of Rick Ross’s song “9 Piece” I made up when I was doing the CGX showcase…lol

Umm…yeah …anyway. The only thing Rick Ross and I have in common is that we both rap; however up until a few weeks ago we probably did weigh the same.

To be honest I never realized I was so huge until my doctor used the words “Morbidly Obese” with me. I studied Latin at Hales Franciscan (S/O to Father Lawrence) so I know that morbid is derived from the Latin word meaning diseased or unhealthy. Obese means fat. So pretty much I was so huge that I was at risk of getting some type of disease that could potentially kill me. Thats is sobering.

I have too much to live for and things to do. I had to change my mind. Fortunately I have people in my life that care for me and have been helping me on this journey and I appreciate them a great deal. I’ve been working out 5 days a week, cutting calories and a list of other things that has led to me shedding 28.0 pounds as of 2 minutes ago. I just weighed myself.

Image

My short term goal is to loose 30 pounds. I’m 2 pounds away!! My long term goal is to get to 250 pounds. Im 42 pounds away.

I can’t speak highly enough about my support system. Everyone from friends and family have been here for me during this journey. They have always been here. I just needed to choose to do it.

It’s so amazing to feel your body change for the better. My clothes fit different, I’m more energetic and over all I just feel good.

Image

I know there are so many other people out there who are like me and what to drop some weight and get healthier. Many of us wait till the New Year to get started on our journey.

I was speaking with someone very close to me and she had the idea of getting fit before the New Year. Lets not wait to drop the weight. Lets go into 2014 NEW!!! IT’S GENIUS!!

I have started The October 1st Challenge “Get Fit For 2014”. The idea is to start your training now and actually get the ball moving in 2013 towards your fitness goals, so that it is second nature by the time the new year comes around. Who knows, maybe you can achieve your goal by midnight of December 31, 2013.

YOU have to WANT to do THIS. No one else can coax you or make fun of you enough to change your life. Thousands of others including myself are here for you to provide support. We need each other, so lets help each other.

So…ARE YOU WITH ME?!!!

I have started a Facebook Group called Precise Fitness. Click here and join the group. We get it going on October 1st and don’t worry about the Holidays, we have solutions for that.

I want to know what you think about this. How much weight do you want to loose? Will you join me on this challenge. Leave a comment below.
