BREAKING: PART 1 ON MY CONVERSATION WITH CHI TOWNS OWN PRECISE CHECK IT OUT RIGHT NOW! TWTTV
I wasn’t really sure what to expect when it came to this movie. When it comes to movies that have the intention of telling the story of the African American Holocaust/Slavery I find that something always seems to be missing. The depictions are watered down. “The Butler” which is a great movie is an example of this. The African American Holocaust/Slavery and Civil Rights can not be summed up in stock videos and a few pictures of Harriet Tubman and Dr King. It is a complex, layered, and gruesome history that must be told in its totality.
“12 Years A Slave” does an exceptional job at pulling the curtain back on the history of America when it comes to its mired past.
**SPOILER ALERT (Not really)**
“12 Years A Slave” is based on a true story from the 1853 biography of Solomon Northup. Solomon Northup played by Chiwetel Ejiofor was a FREE BLACK MAN from Sarasota Springs New York, who was kidnapped while he was in Washington DC in 1841 and was sold into slavery. He spent 12 yrs as a slave.
There were a few scenes that stood out. One scene in particular involved Solomon who was renamed Platt after he became a slave. William Ford his master at the time was having difficulty moving lumber down the narrow Indian Creek in Louisiana. Platt explained to him that he could build log rafts and use those to ship his lumber down the creek. As he was giving his explanation one of the overseers Tibeats was looking extremely confused and jealous because of Platt’s extensive knowledge. William Ford looks at Tibeats and explains how he is impressed with Platt’s knowledge. Tibeats turns to Platt and asks him “Are you an engineer or a nigger?”
That specific question resonated with me specifically because of the hyper racial society we live in now.
Solomon/Platt maintained a dignity that seems to be lacking in our society today.
In 2013 we have people who are comfortable with being called and labeled niggers. We are bombarded with buffoonery. Many times the worst examples of who we are broadcast throughout the world as a representation of our culture.
It’s time to draw a line in the sand.
When I tell people Im a rapper I get a look from them….a confused look. :-/ They may say “You don’t look like a rapper.” or ” Where is all of your jewelry?”. I could go on and on with the assumptions and judgements people make with respect to me being a rapper, but that would take up my entire post.
I come from a school of thought that understands the ability that all of us have as human beings. I represent a culture that at its best is truly the voice of who we are. We educate, we learn, we have fun and influence the world.
I feel like Hip Hop has been enslaved for the past 20+ years and its time to free ourselves. We must never forget who we are. We can never forget our purpose.
Our purpose is to change the world.
I am a Rapper not a nigger.
Who are you?

Let me ask you a question. How many of you would knowingly allow your spouse to engage in an extra marital affair? Ok..Another question for you…How many of you would stay in a marriage when it is clear that you do not love your spouse? Ok here is another question…What do Jaccquline Onasis Kennedy and Mellie Grant have in common?
Bellamy Young is the extremely talented actress who plays the wife of Fitzgerald Grant on the hit ABC television show SCANDAL. Her pedigree is that of an Ivy Leaguer. She holds 2 degrees from Yale. She has a degree in English and a degree in theater studies. She followed her passion for the theatre and parlayed it into roles along side Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames. If we look at the surface of her upbringing if would not be a stretch to say that she could have been easily groomed to be a First Lady.
Bellamy provides different levels to the character of Mellie. Mellie is the first lady of the United States who was essentially married off to Fitz because of the relationship he had with Fitz’s father. It was an arranged marriage and Mellie has been groomed for this all of her life. She does an amazing job with the press and the American people, but guess what….I CAN’T STAND MELLIE!!!
I want to sympathize with this woman who on the surface has her husbands back and is on the tail end of this love triangle. She has a child thinking it would bring her and her husband closer together, but Fitz is looking for the mysteries of the universe between Olivia magical thighs.
That should be enough for me to feel for her. It doesn’t feel good to be cheated on and its being flaunted in your face…dang…I should feel sorry for this woman…but I don’t.
Mellie sees this as part of the design. She helped conspire to get Fitz in Office and she loves being the First Lady. She wishes to keep this status and has her own aspirations of becoming President. It’s these aspirations and attitude that cause her to do some bone headed stuff. Im always left looking at Mellie like…Dang…you get on my nerves.
Mellie is robotic in her approach at times its as though she does not have any feelings. She outed her husband on national Tv and told the world he was having an affair. She is looking for sympathy from the American people. I would assume from the media level that she receives this sympathy. However the viewer gets to see this conniving and callous woman up close and personal. We see that she really does not love her husband. We know that she has other intentions. I think this is why people root for Olivia so much.
There are moments when you can see glimpses of some type of connection between Mellie and Fitz. The moment right before he gets shot she spills her heart out to him and the very last scene of last season Fitz after being jilted by his mistress.
So this is what I think is going happen. I think Mellie takes Fitz back under the condition that he tells the American public that he has been sleeping with a man. Then Mellie Divorces him and makes her run for the presidency. She wins the presidency and marries Olivias ex beau Edison and makes him First Man. Yeah…that could happen. But maybe not…LOL!!
I asked a series of questions at the beginning of this post answer them for me. Im curious to know your thoughts.
Do you feel sorry for Mellie? What do you like about her? What don’t you like about her. I want to know. Leave a comment, like and share. :-)

On any average day in the midst of living, my attention is pulled in multiple directions.
There is a meme that’s floating around the interwebs that reads in effect, that as long as you don’t take the steps to realize your dream you will be working for someone else helping them achieve theirs.
Many times I find myself thinking about the current happenings of the day. I make a conscious effort to avoid them; however having this phone in my hand can be the gateway to loss of focus and being deliberate. It can stop me from progressing.
It can also be a tool to help me focus. It’s my choice.
Everyday we are drawn away from the most important source that should be receiving our attention.

What did you do to change the world today?
This moment is an opportunity for all of us to gain a clear perspective and move forward into our good. As we embrace our greatness we begin to filter out what may be hampering our growth. When we are present we become more aware of forces that may cause us to stray from our path. Do not be swayed.
We have a duty to ourselves and the universe to maximize our time and live our purpose. It is within our purpose that we add on to the good of our lives and the lives of other. Eliminate toxins of negativity doubt and hate. Surround yourself with people who know their true power.
We will continue to prosper and grow because this is what we are ment to do. Believe in who you are and Thank God for who you are.
Stay Focused – Positive and Productive
