Happy Fathers Day – Love – Life Lessons

If I am honest with myself I would say that being a father is probably one of the most challenging things to be in the world. Most times Im not sure what Im doing right. I’m kind of learning as I go along, and I always worry if I am imparting some type of life lesson to my children that they can benefit from. Fatherhood is not easy.

My oldest son called me yesterday he just turned 21 and he said “Whats Up Pops, what you doing tomorrow for fathers day?” I told him I wasn’t sure and that I felt like people really don’t make a big deal out of Fathers day. Then he said “Well if they dont make a big deal about it, Im going to make a big deal about it!” Then we talked some more and ended the phone call as we do most times saying that we love each other.

It was in that moment that I knew I didn’t have to be perfect. My bank account didn’t have to be bursting the seams. I didn’t always have to have the answers. All I ever need to provide to my children is a sincere and true love. This love is what motivates us to do better.

If we look at Cliff Huxtable (Cosby Show) and James Evans (Good Times) as characters their lives are totally different. One lives in his upper middle class home in Brooklyn. The other lives with his family in poverty in a Chicago housing project. Cliff is a doctor. James is a handy man. These two individuals are from totally different spectrums of life; however the one thing they have in common is the love they have for their children. This love translates into these life lessons that help to shape our children, it becomes our bond.

So with that I want to say HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all my friends and family out here who are Dads. You dont have to be perfect you just have to be there to share your love.

This is about real life and preserving this culture that we call Hip Hop.

Watching Tv While Black – The Empire Scandal

Ok I get it. The Cosby show is no longer on television. Serious allegations are swirling around someone many considered the nations dad. Positive representation of African Americans are almost non-existent. The Oscars are too white according to most media outlets and Iggy Azalea and Macklemore are stealing Hip Hop. OK I GET IT!!

The truth of the matter is that all forms of media are influential and have an effect on our psyches. With that being said, I have a confession to make.

Hello ….My name is Precise and I watch Scandal and Empire. 

Now that I have confessed to the world one of my deepest darkest secrets allow me to say that even though I watch these shows I am STILL a BLACK MAN and an Awesome guy.

For some reason there is a divide in our community. Those who label themselves “conscious” have a total disdain for these telvision shows and feel like they are setting black people back 100’s of years.

Many black men have decided that these shows are for women, and if a man watches them his masculinity is questionable.

WTF?

Look…some of you take yourselves much to seriously. I agree that the portrayal of black people on television leaves a lot to be desired. Around the world we are viewed a specific way because of what is being fed through the media. It is important for us to take responsibility with regards to this.

Shonda Rhimes and Lee Daniels have taken some of this responsibility and boldly share a narrative of our lives that is complex and interesting.

I don’t know about you but I like to peel back the layers of who we are. It’s interesting and our experience extends past the history of slavery and civil rights.

We all have complexities and quirks. Just because I’m black doesn’t mean I should have to watch Eyes On The Prize  and Hidden Colors Vol 1, 2 and 3 all the time.

I like watching television with my 5k friends on Fb and sharing reactions in my status. I don’t post “spoilers” contrary to what some people (my sister) may think. Wendsday and Thursday nights are cool. It gives us the opportunity to come together and share something, even if it’s just a television show.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be 86 years old today, had he not been assassinated in April 4,1968. Dr. Kings life has been examined and studied extensively by academics, scholars, politicians and social activists around the world. The world speaks highly of Dr. King and his accomplishments. Today we celebrate his birth and his work on a nationally recognized holiday.

As I write this blog, my mother calls me and informs me that my uncle Victor Benoit has just been appointed as minister of Social Affairs and Labor in Haiti’s political cabinet. I am so very proud of him. He has worked hard for the Haitian people all of his life and this appointment is well deserved. This news immediately causes me to draw parallels.

There is a certain type of boldness and audacity that would allow someone to believe that the work that they do can affect change. Everyone does not have this type of courage; however when one does have this type of courage they can change the world.

I just watched Selma recently and what I appreciate most about the film is the human perspective that was given. From the time I was a child up until my adult years Dr. King always had this iconic persona that almost made him seem infallible. The director of the film Ava DuVernay showed Dr. King as a human being, someone who had faults and fears and doubts. Take a moment and think about what it took to challenge the status quo in the sixties. His life and the lives of others who were associated with him in any way were always in danger, but they stayed the course. The issue at hand at that time and even now is our FREEDOM. The ability to be who we are without any apologies.

Socially we are at a tipping point in the world. Uprisings worldwide have challenged political norms and changed lives. The United States is currently in the midst of this kind of change. Let us channel the spirit of Dr. King and others who had the courage to fight and bring about the necessary shift in our reality.

SCANDAL-LESS Thursday – Harrison Wright – Little Walter – Gladiator – Columbus Short

I know I’m a day late!!!…HA! So…Im not really sure when Scandal returns however I know all of you have been anticipating the next amazing installment of SCANDAL LESS Thursday…. WOOO HOOOO!!!! ITS BACK! 😉

Harrisson Wright is probably the most mysterious Gladiator in Olivia’s camp. He is extremely loyal and is good for a pep talk when things get rough. We still don’t know too much about him. Im thinking Shonda is writing some great back story about him at this very moment. What we do know is that he was in jail for something and Olivia helped him out….hmmmmmm

We may not know much about Harrison however the actor by the name of Columbus Short has an extremely solid resume very early in his career. Columbus started his career as a dancer and is first role was in “You Got Served” His first lead role was in Save The Last Dance 2. It went straight to DVD. His next role that I think most people especially the ladies now him from is “Stomp The Yard” , a realistic look at Greek Culture on Historically Black College campuses. Not so much on the second part of that last sentence…HA! Anyway the brother can dance.

His acting chops are tested in the movie “Cadillac Records” where he plays the part of Little Walter. Columbus has been in a few films I have seen but did not know it was him. He has a way of becoming immersed in his role.

Last season every ones story was able to be told. Harrison’s is still a great mystery. Let me tell you what I think happened. I think he was in a dance battle and was trying one of his most dangerous signature moves, and he caused a melee in the midst of a family doing the wobble at a barbecue in Atlanta. Someone lost their life and he was charged with murder during a line dance. Olivia being a fan of line dancing and Stompin the yard felt bad for him and arranged to have him released and become a gladiator because of his great dancing skills and his ability to rally the troops. Well….maybe thats not what happened at all. Shonda’s probably writing his story right now.

Power Up!! – Don’t Be Swayed – Stay Focused

This moment is an opportunity for all of us to gain a clear perspective and move forward into our good. As we embrace our greatness we begin to filter out what may be hampering our growth. When we are present we become more aware of forces that may cause us to stray from our path. Do not be swayed.

We have a duty to ourselves and the universe to maximize our time and live our purpose. It is within our purpose that we add on to the good of our lives and the lives of other. Eliminate toxins of negativity doubt and hate. Surround yourself with people who know their true power.

We will continue to prosper and grow because this is what we are ment to do. Believe in who you are and Thank God for who you are.
