WGCI’s Big Jam was LIT!

WGCI’s Big Jam 2016 went off without a hitch at the United Center. After the drama that Trey Songz was involved with in Detroit he was able to make it to Chicago and perform for his fans. This Big Jam was pretty diverse as big jams go. The early part of the show was filled with Chicago acts who have gone national. G Herbo, LiL Bibby and Dreezy all represented their city properly and Chicago gave it up for their people. The controversial 18 year old LiL Yachty who says Biggie is overrated gave a decent set. He asked that the lights be turned down and performed his hit song “One Night” to the flicker of cell phone lights.
Desiigner did as expected and took the level of energy up a tuck as he hopped frantically across the stage. The anticipation for Trey Songz was high once he sauntered onto the stage showered by the screams of his adoring fans he was able to give them what they came for. He stranded the audience and few times and got the attention he expected as his shirt came off.

I have to say the highlight of the evening was watching Chris Brown bring a level of professionalism that is not see often in these type of shows. He really can’t be touched as a performer and you could tell he was holding back. I’m not sure who created the set list but having Young Thug close after Chris Brown was not a good idea.
Young Thug came out unceremoniously after making the crowd wait about 10 minutes after his intro. You know Thug has his core fans so in their eyes he can Donna wrong. Overall his set was lazy and uninspired. It has to be hard to follow Chris Brown. Another Big Jam is in the books.

We asked concert goer Jazmine Jackson what she thought of the show and who was her favorite. “This was my first concert and I had a lot more fun than I thought I would. I throughly enjoyed all of it, but mostly because my sister Jo and her friend had an amazing time. Personally my favorite part was Trey songz guitarist I was in love with his solos. I also enjoyed Chris Brown and Young Thug’s segments. The lil ratchet girl in me had a ball.” She said.

Haiti got free today! – What are you waiting for?

2017 is here and you can feel the shift in the air. People are preparing and planning, resolving and recalibrating. It’s especially poignant this year because in less than 20 day the United States will have a new president. It’s sobering news for some and inconsequential to others. One thing for sure is that this is the moment to get free. The time has come where the oppressed must galivanize and affect change directly.

On this day in 1804 Haiti claimed it’s independence. After ousting the French and the Spanish from the island the first independent Black Country was established in the Western Hemisphere. This is important to recognize all the time because it shows what can be done when a people have a resolve and one goal. The courage, bravery and orginazation it took for a group of slaves to overthrow their rulers should not be overlooked. There is power in the collective. A focused determination can and will shift the tide.

In the spirit of Dessalines, in the spirit of Toussaint in this moment we claim our freedom and expect the best for our existence. Happy New Year and Happy Haitian Independence Day!!

Azealia Banks is a witch – Sacrificing Chickens (VIDEO)

So I’m surfing twitter as I am known to do sometimes and I look to my left to see what’s trending. For some reason Azealia Banks who is no longer on Twitter because of some shenanigans from earlier on this year is number 3. So I investigate. Well what I found is that Azaelia is what some may call a Bitch except Bitch starts with a “W”. She is a Witch Yo!!

Azaelia has been sacrificing chickens in her closet for three years. She does this for her career and her life overall. Now as an avid chicken eater it would be quite hypocritical for me to comment on the sacrifice of some chicken. I mean I just had Harold’s the other day. Anyway Azealia is closing out the year with a bang.

J Cole makes better music than you – get over it

J. Cole at AAHH! Fest in Chicago – Photo Credit: Eddy “Precise” Lamarre

So 4 Your Eyez Only dropped recently and its a great album. However if you let the internet inform you, many are saying it’s a snorgasm, boring, and a list of other clever well crafted lines. I am by no means a J. Cole stan. I am an artist and because of this I can tell when an artist is cutting corners or putting their heart into something. 4 Your Eyez Only is a project that is well thought out, lyrical and the production is on point. If you feel otherwise you are just mad that his work garners the attention that yours doesn’t.
The world we live in now might as well be a big barrel of crabs who will easily speak an ill word towards anything that doesn’t have anything to do with them. I hear most of the ill will coming from fellow artists or those who claim to be and have never put out a piece of work. They don’t even know what it takes to title a song or even create a concept for an album. Stop being such a damn hater and give credit where it is due. It’s easy to be a critic. You can say I don’t like or I like it with out any informed viewpoint.

The way music is consumed these days has created this army of haters. They can’t even sit still long enough to listen to a 51 minute concept album and allow for it to work on their senses. Music fans now just want to be fed what they want, and they don’t even know what they want.

Here is my suggestion to you. Go get a bunch of your “beat making” friends and gather all your rhymes that all end with the word nigga and go make your masterpiece for the world. Till then keep your not doing nothing azz opinion to yourself.

J. Cole grows up with ‘4 Your Eyez Only’

J. Cole’s  4 Your Eyez Only is a love letter to Hip Hop. The interesting thing about J Cole is that their is a segment of the population who loves him and another who feels like he is cool and not living up to his potential. I can say with utmost certainty that J. Cole is easily one of the most talented and honest artists that we have come across in many years.

This recent project has been in the making for the past 2 years. At first listen the music sort of blended into my surroundings. I knew it was dope but I wasn’t tuned in. When I came back to it I was focused and what I found was that this is not an album of thrown together songs. It has a common theme of redemption, forgiveness and love. Now the average Hip Hop fan was probably not checking for that after the release of “False Prophets” and “Everybody dies”, two songs released before the the album was dropped. Interestingly neither song is on the album. Cole hit his fans with the old one two. He dropped some heat for them and then provided a project full of thought and substance.

This is a project from an emcee who has matured with every release. There are a few standout songs. “Foldin Clothes” is a song where Cole laments on his love for his significant other and wants to show his appreciation “If I could make life easier , the way you do mine save you some time alleviate a bit of stress from your mind help you relax let you recline.” “She’s Mine part 2” is the most personal and emotional of all the songs from the project. It’s a song about his daughter. He speaks on his love for her. “Reminisce when you came out the womb tears of joy I think fill up the room you are now the reason that I fight I ain’t never did nothin this right tinny whole life.” Even as he shares this deep emotion he still touches on the economic struggles of Black people on Black Friday.

4 Your Eyez Only touches minds and souls in a way that autotune never could. Excellent work Mr. Cole.

Former NFL running back Rashaan Salaam found dead at 42

Former NFL running back Rashaan Salaam was found dead at a park in Boulder Colorado. He was 42.  Salaam won the coveted Heisman Trophy in 1994. He was a first round draft pick in 1995. Salaam was the 21st pick overall by the Bears. In his rookie year, Salaam rushed for 1,074 yards, becoming the youngest player in league history to rush for over 1,000 yards.

A police spokeswoman said the cause of death is still under investigation. Police have mentioned that there is no indication of foul play. Salaams mother Khalada told USA Today sports that they suspected suicide.

“They said they found a note and would share that with is when we get there.” Said Salaams mother.

Salaam was well loved in Colorado. Matt Russell who is currently the director of personnel for the Denver Broncos and a former teammate of Salaam at The University Of Colorado shared some of his thoughts.

“Rashaan was as dynamic off the field as he was on the field as a player. He was a fiercely loyal friend, someone who was always in your corner and had your back. He was the ultimate teammate and supportive of everyone in his locker room. If there was ever a guy who was going to get a personal foul for protecting someone on his team, Rashaan was that guy.

“Rashaan was the ultimate Buffalo and was so proud to be called a ‘Colorado Buffalo.’ We were part of the same recruiting class, what we called ‘nine deuce,’ the Class of 1992. On the field, Rashaan was the definition of a winner. It was important to him. He practiced hard, he played hard and he made our teams better. Rashaan and I laughed a lot after practices because we had so many battles and fights. Even when we last saw each other a few years ago at the CU Hall of Fame induction, we still shared those great memories and had a lot of laughs from our time together at Colorado.

“My heart goes out to Rashaan’s mother and his family. They have a lot to be proud of with the person that Rashaan was, the way he treated people and the friend he was to everyone he came across. He will be missed by so many, and I extend my deepest sympathies to Rashaan’s many friends and family.”

Precise provides an even handed reflection on where Hip Hop is and why the roots of this culture should be respected. “I ain’t tripping on the golden age music changes all the time in a growing stage, and I ain’t hating on the drill and trap but it wouldn’t be here without that Ol boom bap.”  -Precise

Is Assata Shakur safe now that Fidel has died?

screen-shot-2016-11-26-at-1-24-12-am

Assata Shakur – Photo Source: instagram @haliesalassie96

Former Black Panther Assata Shakur may be adversely affected by the recent death of Cuba’s former leader Fidel Castro.

Assata explains in her own words what happened and why she currently has political asylum in Cuba.

“My name is Assata (“she who struggles”) Olugbala ( “for the people” ) Shakur (“the thankful one”), and I am a 20th century escaped slave. Because of  government persecution, I was left with no other choice than to flee from the political repression, racism and violence that dominate the US government’s policy towards people of color. I am an ex political prisoner, and I have been living in exile in Cuba since 1984. I have been a political activist most of my life, and although the U.S. government has done everything in its power to criminalize me, I am not a criminal, nor have I ever been one. In the 1960s, I participated in various struggles: the black liberation movement, the student rights movement, and the movement to end the war in Vietnam. I  joined the Black Panther Party. By 1969 the Black Panther Party had become the number one organization targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO program. because the Black Panther Party demanded the total liberation of black people, J. Edgar  Hoover called it “greatest threat to the internal security of the country” and  vowed to destroy it and its leaders and activists.”

The lines of communication have opened between Cuba and the United States after a vote by the United Nations urged the United States to lift the economic embargo in 2015. As a result of this vote both countries are now on speaking terms and travel restrictions are being lifted.

The FBI is currently offering a reward of up to 1,000,000 for the apprehension of Assata. She was charged with a murder in 1973. She was found guilty of first degree murder in 1977 and was sentenced to life in prison. She escaped and now lives in Cuba.

Now that the two countries are communicating, what will they be willing to do to sweeten any deals that may be in the works. Will Assata be used as a pawn. Their is a cry for President Obama to grant her a pardon before he leave office. Twitter is talking.
