5 reasons why you should support Mo’nique

monique

Mo’nique appeared on the internet recently asking that we boycott Netflix because of gender bias and race bias. The long and short of it is Netflix offered Monique and Oscar Award winner 500k to do a comedy special after paying Amy Schumer a white woman comic 13 million for hers.

For the past few years, Mo’nique has ostracized herself from the industry for speaking her truth and calling out Black Hollywood’s elite by name. Oprah, Tyler Perry, and Lee Daniels are her main targets. Because of this Mo’nique says she has been blackballed. This recent lowball offer made by Netflix is the most recent example of Monique’s treatment from the industry.

In recent news, it has been reported that Black-Ish star Tracee Ellis-Ross is getting paid substantially less than her male co-star Anthony Anderson and she has threatened to make fewer appearances on the show. She is being supported by the #TimesUp movement.

The #TimesUp movement was created to address sexual assault, harassment, and inequality in the workplace. Whats makes Mo’nique’s situation different than Tracee Ellis-Ross.

After watching Mo’nique’s explanation on Sway in the Morning I’ve come up with 5 reasons that we should support Mo’nique.

5. The Parkers

vibe-vixen-the-parkers-600x600

Mo’nique played a single mom who decided to go back to school and change her life. The in again off again tension between her and Mr. Olgivie is worth the price of admission.

4. Her Weightloss

MoNique-weight-loss-feat1

Witnessing how much weight she has lost since the beginning of her career is pretty amazing. This is coming from a woman who at one point had a disdain for “skinny bitches”

3. Her performance at the 2003 BET Awards

Plus size women  and BBW’s across the country were jumping out of their seats as Mo’nique performed Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love”

2. Precious

precious

Mo’nique got paid 50k to do an independent film. She embodied and bodied her role so well that she won an Oscar for it. However, since that has happened she’s been treated like an up and coming artist struggling to be noticed for her obvious talent.

1. Black Unity

This may not be the issue for you. Maybe you are not a Mo’nique fan. I get that. Over the course of the past 5 years, we have seen public lynchings of some of our best and brightest with the support of Black people.

What makes Mo’nique’s gripe any different than any other woman’s grip from the #timesup movement? At what point do we really start supporting our own? Right now we don’t have the leisure of watching us get picked off from a balcony every other month. If this is not issue for you so be it, but we have to come together for real for us to shake this mental illness and start building some real influence.

Ex-cop gets 20 years for killing Walter Scott

Ex-South Carolina police officer Michael Slager has been sentenced to 20 years for the killing of Walter Scott. In April of 2015 Walter Scott joined the ranks of unarmed Black men who were shot by the police. Scott was pulled over by Slager for a busted tail light. Scott ran and Slager shot him in the back 5 times and claimed he feared for his life. Slager pleaded guilty in May of 2017 to violation of civil rights by acting under the color of the law in Scott’s killing.

“We are hurt, and we do have some type of compassion for the Slager family, in that they have to suffer as well. And yes we do forgive Michael Slager for what he did. But yes, we did want justice for my brother and we feel that we have gotten a sense of justice.” Said Anthony Scott, Walter’s brother.

I remember watching this on social media and it was clear that Slager shot Scott in cold blood. Thank God for the person who was on the scene and was able to record this. Let’s hope this informs the Lequan Mcdonald trial.

How do you feel about this sentencing? Leave a comment.

Mike Pence hijacks Black life for patriotism – It’s our fault

Mike Pence twitter @VP

Photo source: Mike Pence twitter @VP

The Vice President of the United States Mike Pence decided to leave a Colts game because he feels that players should not disrespect the troops by kneeling during the national anthem.

The act of taking a knee made prevalent by Colin Kaepernick during a pre-season game in San Francisco almost two years ago has morphed from a statement on police brutality with regards to the injustice inflicted on Black people to a commentary on patriotism. Watching this happen in front of our faces is like watching a magic trick you know the secret to. This tactic is so deliberate and we allowed it to happen.

Once again Black life is disregarded. In the eyes of America, it is clear that dealing with anything having to do with Black people is the last thing to be considered at any moment during the history of this country. It’s our own fault. We have been lulled to sleep with a dream, an American dream that goes unrealized for a large segment of the population. Every life taken or affected by rogue law enforcement is a notch on the belt of American racism as it continues to fester in the hearts of the dominant class.

Black males aged 15-34 were nine times more likely than other Americans to be killed by law enforcement officers last year, according to data collected for The Counted, an effort by the Guardian to record every such death. They were also killed at four times the rate of young white men.

The previous statistic was taken from a Huffington Post article focused on figures gathered last year. That statistic is not surprising and does not cause any pause because Black people are zombies now. You will be hard-pressed to find a large number of individuals who will boycott the NFL. The act of turning off the television or even changing the station to directly affect the economics of a league that does not support the people who make up large percentages their employees seem foreign or even a waste of time. Instead, we want someone else to take a stand. So as we wait we watch the movement get hijacked just like any other movement that had to deal with the freedom of Black people.

O.J. Simpson is a free man again – The Juice is Loose

The_former_American_football_star_and_actor_OJ_Simpson_has_been_-a-34_1506846902211

O.J. Simpson is a free man after serving nine years in a Nevada prison. Simpson was arrested and jailed because of a kidnapping and armed robbery in 2007. He was caught trying to reclaim items that were initially his. He was the only individual out of five who was jailed because of his involvement.

O.J. was released just 8 minutes after he was officially eligible for release. His release was quiet and happened without the presence of paparazzi and press.

In July of 2017 the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners voted unanimously to release Simpson on parole. O.J. will be monitored and he is not allowed to consume large amounts of alcohol or spend time with convicted felons.

The life of O.J. a storied NFL athlete took a turn in 1994 when he was named a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Ultimately with the assistance of his team of lawyers lead by Johnny Cochran, Simpson was acquitted. The United States was split down racial lines and as the verdict was read live reactions between black and white citizens were extremely different.

The trial was dubbed “the trial of the century” and left the nation polarized. Different stories of what actually happened surfaced everyday. The way that the trial was covered was deemed by many as a circus and  launched many careers of those involved into the spotlight. That trial happened on the heels of the LA riots that were a result of Los Angeles police officers being acquitted for the beating of Rodney King in 1991.

Even after Simpson was acquitted of murder the victims’ families filed a wrongful death suit and Simpson was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages.

It will be interesting to see how Simpson lives his life after this release. One thing is for certain, his life will never be the same.

Chicago teens stream kidnapping and torture on Facebook live

Victim bound and gagged – Screenshot from youtube

Four people are now in custody for an alleged kidnapping that was broadcast on Facebook live. The brazen act took place in Tuesday on the 3400 block of West Lexington on the West Side of Chicago. The victim of the assault was tied up, beaten, his clothes were cut, his hair was cut until his scalp started to bleed. The also used his head as an ashtray. Brittany Hearing is one of the individuals who has been arrested and she is seen holding the phone and communicating with those who are watching the stream. Her facebook page has been shared on YouTube.

The kidnapping has been hash tagged on Twitter as #BLMKidnapping. The suspects are heard in the background of the video screaming F– Trump and F–White people. However; it has not been stated that they have any affiliation with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Supt. Johnson said in the press conference that he thinks those comments are stupidity and people ranting about something that they think might make a headline.

At some point the victim was released and was found by the Chicago police wandering the street. The police then responded to a battery call at a residence close to where the victim was found. Once the police saw the video it was determined that the man in the video and the man they found was the same person.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said “It’s sickening. It makes you wonder what would make individuals treat somebody like that. I’ve been a cop or 28 years, and I’ve seen things that you shouldn’t see in a lifetime and it still amazes me how you still see things that you just shouldn’t.

Commander Kevin Duffin mentioned in the press conference that the victim was an acquaintance of one of the subjects. The victim is reportedly from a Chicago suburb and was recently reported missing by his parents. Duffin also stated a van was stolen from that suburb.

“If you commit an act of violence in the city of Chicago you will experience the full weight of the Chicago Police Department. Tonight four individuals have felt the consequences of their actions” said Supt. Johnson

Is Assata Shakur safe now that Fidel has died?

screen-shot-2016-11-26-at-1-24-12-am

Assata Shakur – Photo Source: instagram @haliesalassie96

Former Black Panther Assata Shakur may be adversely affected by the recent death of Cuba’s former leader Fidel Castro.

Assata explains in her own words what happened and why she currently has political asylum in Cuba.

“My name is Assata (“she who struggles”) Olugbala ( “for the people” ) Shakur (“the thankful one”), and I am a 20th century escaped slave. Because of  government persecution, I was left with no other choice than to flee from the political repression, racism and violence that dominate the US government’s policy towards people of color. I am an ex political prisoner, and I have been living in exile in Cuba since 1984. I have been a political activist most of my life, and although the U.S. government has done everything in its power to criminalize me, I am not a criminal, nor have I ever been one. In the 1960s, I participated in various struggles: the black liberation movement, the student rights movement, and the movement to end the war in Vietnam. I  joined the Black Panther Party. By 1969 the Black Panther Party had become the number one organization targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO program. because the Black Panther Party demanded the total liberation of black people, J. Edgar  Hoover called it “greatest threat to the internal security of the country” and  vowed to destroy it and its leaders and activists.”

The lines of communication have opened between Cuba and the United States after a vote by the United Nations urged the United States to lift the economic embargo in 2015. As a result of this vote both countries are now on speaking terms and travel restrictions are being lifted.

The FBI is currently offering a reward of up to 1,000,000 for the apprehension of Assata. She was charged with a murder in 1973. She was found guilty of first degree murder in 1977 and was sentenced to life in prison. She escaped and now lives in Cuba.

Now that the two countries are communicating, what will they be willing to do to sweeten any deals that may be in the works. Will Assata be used as a pawn. Their is a cry for President Obama to grant her a pardon before he leave office. Twitter is talking.
