Drake releases new single “What Did I Miss”: Who did he put on ice?

Drake’s “What Did I Miss?” Signals a Ruthless New Era

-Eddy “Precise” Lamarre

Drake has always been a master of the moment, shifting moods, alliances, and soundscapes with the ease of a veteran hitmaker. But with his new single, “What Did I Miss?”, the Toronto superstar is issuing a warning. The track, which premiered July 4 during a livestream event called Iceman: Episode 1, marks the beginning of what’s shaping up to be his coldest and most calculated era yet.

The single arrives as Drake introduces a new persona: Iceman. The name draws from two distinct inspirations. One is Kimi Räikkönen, the stoic Formula 1 driver known as “The Iceman” for his cool-headed demeanor and unflinching focus under pressure. Drake has shared photos of himself wearing Räikkönen’s signature helmet and has posted subtle references to his racing persona. The second inspiration comes from George Gervin, the NBA Hall of Famer celebrated for his effortless scoring and calm presence on the court. Both figures represent a type of composed dominance that Drake seems eager to embody during this next phase of his career.

The sound of “What Did I Miss?” reflects that same energy. From the opening notes, the production is cold and minimal, built on haunting melodies and a brooding bass line. DJ Lewis, Tay Keith, FnZ, and others provide the icy backdrop, giving Drake plenty of space to deliver some of his most direct and cutting lyrics in recent memory.

Throughout the track, Drake addresses friends and associates he feels turned their backs on him during his widely publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar. His words are sharp, but his delivery is calm and detached. One lyric in particular has already sent shockwaves across social media: “I saw bro went to Pop Out with them, but been dick riding gang since ‘Headlines’.” Without naming names, Drake takes aim at those who publicly aligned with his rivals while privately benefiting from their connection to him.

The rollout surrounding the single has been as calculated as the music itself. In the livestream event, Drake appeared in a massive Toronto warehouse surrounded by ice machines, weapons, and industrial imagery, creating a stark, cold atmosphere that reinforces the themes of the song. He was shown driving a truck branded with the Iceman logo through the empty streets of the city, further pushing the narrative of isolation and emotional detachment.

What makes “What Did I Miss?” stand out from the usual diss tracks is its restraint. Drake is not interested in loud declarations or frantic back-and-forth exchanges. Instead, the song plays like a controlled strike, precise and deliberate. It is less about scoring quick points and more about drawing a clear boundary between himself and those he now views as outsiders.

The single also sets the tone for what’s expected to be his next full-length album, tentatively titled Iceman, slated for release in 2025. If this first release is any indication, the album will likely lean into colder, more stripped-down production, with Drake embracing his new persona fully. The themes of distance, loyalty, and self-reliance are front and center, signaling a shift in both his music and his approach to fame.

With “What Did I Miss?”, Drake is repositioning himself. This is not the Drake who’s looking for sympathy or trying to appeal to everyone. This is the Iceman, a figure of control and detachment, here to let the music—and the cold—do the talking.

Kendrick Lamar Dominates 2024 With Surprise Album ‘GNX’

Kendrick Lamar has put an exclamation mark on his domination of 2024 with the surprise release of his latest album “GNX.” This release emerges as a seismic cultural moment, quickly becoming the talk of the internet. Inspired by the Buick Grand National he leans on in the cover art, Lamar embraces his “villain era” with unwavering confidence.

The album opener “wacced out murals” sets the tone with production that feels like a stripped-down, bass-driven reimagining of Whodini’s classic “Friends.” Lamar embraces the darker side of that memorable hit and weaponizes the track while highlighting haters, betrayal and self-preservation. “It used to be fuck that nigga, but now it’s plural, fuck everybody,” he raps, sparing no one. He even has a words for Snoop Dogg, whom he called out for sharing Drake’s AI-generated diss track “Taylor Made” during the height of the Drake vs. Kendrick battle.

One of the standout tracks, “reincarnated,” showcases Lamar’s strength as an artist. He demonstrates his keen ability to blend storytelling and introspection. Lyrically, he takes listeners on a journey through three lives experiencing reincarnation. The track is reminiscent of 2Pac’s “All Eyez on Me.” In the first two verses, he adopts Tupac’s cadence before closing the song with his distinctive delivery. The track is layered, as the three people described are reincarnated into different lives, while Lamar’s masterful delivery suggesting that he is the reincarnation of Tupac.

The production across “GNX” captures a minimalist, bass-heavy sound of L.A. and provides space for Lamar’s verses. This is most evident on “tv off,” produced by DJ Mustard and reminiscent of 2024’s culturally relevant anthem “Not Like US.”

The album features Mexican singer Deyra Barrera and rappers, Peyso, AzChike, Dody 6, Hitta J3, Peysoh, Siete, Wallie The Sensei and Young Threat. SZA joined her former TDE labelmate on “Luther” and “Gloria.” SZA’s performance on “Gloria” is hypnotic, her voice floating with ease through the verses before building into a luxuriant guitar solo.

Another standout track, “man at the garden,” evokes the haunting tension of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” along with “One Mic” by Nas and delivers an introspective Lamar. He examines his worthiness, boldly stating “I deserve it all” when discussing his accolades, accomplishments and the work behind them.

“GNX” is a statement during a year when Lamar made it his mission to fully separate himself from his peers. He delivers his honesty with a boldness that compels listeners to dig deeper into their own identity.

The Art of the Troll: Inside Drake’s DeRozan Strategy

By: Eddy “Precise” Lamarre

The Kendrick vs. Drake battle is a battle that keeps giving us cultural moments. On November 2, 2024 the Sacramento Kings faced the Toronto Raptors in Toronto. The night started off with the Raptors legend Vince Carter having his jersey retired. Many a celebrity was on hand to witness this moment but none bigger that the Toronto native Drake.

Drake has been popping up more and more since losing his most recent battle. This battle has caused rifts between Drake and many who he considered friends. DeMar DeRozen, once one of Drakes closest friends was the target of a few bitter remarks from the Canadian rapper. It hasn’t always been like this.

From 2009 to 2018 Drake and DeRozan’s friendship was a cornerstone of Toronto basketball culture. Drake consistently championed DeRozen from his court-side seats and the pair appeared on the cover of SLAM magazine. This relationship seemingly crumbled as a result of DeRozen appearing at Kendrick Lamar’s “The Pop Out” concert in June of 2024 and followed it up with a cameo in the “Not Like Us” music video. Drake unfollowed DeRozen and others and his recent actions at the Raptors game demonstrate a certain level of disdain.

At the game Drake is seen on video mouthing “F-k outta here p–y” as DeRozen passed by. And, during the Raptors broadcast Drake mentioned that if they were to ever retire DeRozen’s jersey he would personally “go up there and take it down” DeRozen responded with a laugh saying “He gonna have along way to climb to take it down. So, tell him good luck”

The way that this is happening is in classic Drake form. He does these types of things in public forums and always uses an element of humor to soften the blow. He has mastered the art of creating viral moments and being a troll. The idea of Drake being a tough guy is hard to digest when we take his content and music into consideration. However; the fact that this conversation is on everybody’s mind shows that he has succeeded in being the most talked about rapper yet again.

Do you think this battle is real or is Drake being a troll? Share in the comments.

Beyoncé drops new single ‘Break My Soul’; what is the internet saying?

LOS ANGELES, CA – MARCH 27: In this handout photo provided by A.M.P.A.S., Beyoncé performs during the ABC telecast of the 94th Oscars® on Sunday, March 27, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Mason Poole/A.M.P.A.S. via Getty Images)

The queen of everything Beyoncé has officially taken over the internet once again with the release of her latest single “Break My Soul” from her upcoming album Renaissance: Act 1. From the sounds of it Beyoncé is riding the House music train right now. So that means dance floors are going to be packed with the BeyHive having a ball every time the song comes across the speakers. The track was produced by Beyonce, The Dream and Tricky Stewart. Big Freedia’s voice is all over the track serving up words of encouragement and inspiration.

Beyoncé is flexing every skill on this track. Her voice sounds buttery, refreshed and bright. This is only going to stoke the fire of anticipation when it comes to the release of Renaissance: Act 1 on July 29, 2022.

Last week Drake released his House music inspired Honestly, Nevermind to luke warm reviews. The reviews were so lukewarm that Drake speaks up for his release. A video of Drake surfaced with him defending his decision about the direction he took with the album. Drake says, “It’s all good if you don’t get it yet. It’s all good. That’s what we do. That’s what we do. We wait for you to catch up. We’re in here, though. We’re caught up already. On to the next. My goodness.”

Its unlikely that Beyoncé will suffer the same type of backlash. The internet is already blazing with approval.

Beyoncé and her ode to empowerment will surely be the theme of the summer and it’s exciting to see her throngs of supporters come out of the woodwork to support her. The Beyhive is loyal. They support their queen and even buy her products sight unseen. When she made the official announcement of her release date she allowed her supporters to reserve the album and purchase a box with unknown contents. I totally believe if Beyoncé included a hand written poem and some candy it would drive the people wild. She’s got the Midas touch when it comes to this music thing.

Drake gives us something to do during the quarantine – The Toosie Slide (Video)

Life has been so different. Anxiety is high. You can’t even hear a sneeze these days without getting nervous. For this reason I have to give it up to Drake for his latest creation “Toosie Slide”.

Who knew what we needed was a new dance and a tour of Drakes new palatial Canadian home to provide some type of distraction from this madness? Good job Drake and thanks for the tour.

Drake pretty much Kanye’d Cardi B with new video ‘Nice For What’

Screen Shot 2018-04-07 at 1.12.46 AM

Drake pretty much Kanye’d Cardi B ala Taylor Swift at the VMA’s with the surprise release of his song and video “Nice For What’. It’s like he said “Yo Cardi, I’m really happy for you Imma let you finish but right now I’m dropping one of the best videos of all time.” I have no idea who is on the OVO marketing team but they deserve a raise. Just one month ago Drake was lamenting “God’s Plan” and passing out One million Dollars. Today he did what he does best. He cakes for the ladies and they love him for it.

The video for “Nice For What” directed by Karena Evans is star studded and a nod to the #MeToo movement showcasing powerful women in the entertainment industry.   Olivia Wilde, Misty Copeland, Issa Rae, Rashida Jones, Jourdan Dunn, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tiffany Haddish, Yara Shahidi, Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth Lejonhjärta, Victoria Lejonhjärta, Letitia Wright, Bria Vinaite, Emma Roberts, Syd and Michelle Rodriguez all make cameos. The most visible woman in the video is Lauryn Hill who doesn’t make a cameo but is the voice you hear consistently during the song.

So Drake breaks the internet once again. Check out the video below. Tell us what you think.

(Video) Drake shows us ‘God’s Plan’

Screen Shot 2018-02-16 at 12.10.03 PM

Drake irks the hell out of me, but right now I can say he’s my favorite rapper. A few weeks ago the rap crooner dropped a 2 song EP called Scary Hours The song ‘Diplomatic Immunity’ broke streaming records but in my opinion, the song ‘God’s Plan’ is the standout single.

Drake recently dropped the video for God’s Plan. The video opens with a statement “ The Budget for this video was $996,631.90. WE GAVE IT ALL AWAY. Don’t tell the label.” Therein lies the beauty of this video. Drake spends his time blessing residents of Miami with money. He bought groceries for a supermarket full of people, blessed a high-school student with a 50k scholarship to high school and a few other super generous and amazing things.

Drake has been relatively quiet since July of last year but 2018 has proven to be quite different. He’s dropped a guest verse on ‘Walk it Like I Talk It’ off the Migos’ latest release Culture II. “Look Alive’ by BlocBoy JB and Drake is currently streaming everywhere and the people are anticipating the new album.

The video was filmed in Miami over a course of three days. Drake had this to say via Instagram “Last 3 days were the best I have had in a very long time…there’s nothing like seeing people experience a joyful moment when you can tell they need it the most.”

Say what you want about this Canadian child star turned American rap star, one thing you can say is that his heart is in the right place.

Miami came up on this one let’s pray these good vibes spread across the nation.

Peep the video below. Get your tissues out for this one cause it’s a tear jerker.

Check him for a wire or an ear piece…Please: Be a Man!

One time I was on the redline going wherever it was I was going and I ran into a young lady on the train. She was pretty and had an Erykah Baduesque vibe before anything like that even existed. We started talking and we found out that we knew some mutual people. This is pre-facebook, so she asks “Hey what school do you got to?”  I say “I go to Olive Harvey.” She asks” Do you know such and such?” she then names one of my closest friends at the time and I say “Yeah that’s my boy I know him and his girlfriend, they are pretty cool.”

The next day I get to the lunchroom at Olive Harvey and our mutual friend pulls me to the side and asks me did I meet such and such on the train yesterday and why did I say I knew his girlfriend. The young lady I met was in fact his girlfriend and I just bust him out without even realizing it. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Chicago is really small and to never talk about your friends relationships with anyone else other than your friend. I internalize that as one of my man laws and that is one I will never violate.

This brings me to more recent times and this recent lack of tact when it comes to acknowledging and keeping any unwritten man law. D’Angelo Russell of the LA Lakers recorded a private conversation that he was having with Nick Young about women he has or hasn’t has sex with. It wouldn’t be a big deal if Nick Young was not engaged to the “Fancy” Iggy Izalea and if it didn’t get released. Then you have a dude who calls himself Partynextdoor posts a picture of himself in bed with a young lady Kehlani who was supposedly dating Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kehlani later posted a picture of herself in the hospital as a result of the backlash she received because of the picture she attempted suicide. Then Chris Brown decides he needs to share his commentary and say this woman didn’t attempt suicide she just wanted attention.

There is a different breed of man out here. He is hyper sensitive, petty and easily offended. It’s not a good look. It seems like men have lost their way. So allow me to remind men of a few rules.

1.Be a MAN!

2. You don’t sleep with your friends girl.

3. You do not get involved in gossip.

4. You do not dry snitch of your friend.

5. If no one asks you don’t volunteer information.

6. Don’t kiss and tell.

7. Keep your business to yourself.

8. Don’t be petty.

9. Do not engage yourself in a public argument with a woman (you will lose)

10. Mind your business.

I hope these reminders help. No one wants to be in a world full of suckers and snitches.
