What does it mean to you to be a Cubs fan?

Being a Cubs fan for me means loyalty! I have been a Cubs fan for over 30 years and I have been waiting for a long time for the Cubs to reach the World Series. My very first professional sporting event was a Cubs game when I was 3 years old and I have been a fan ever since.

Why are you a Cubs fan?

I’m a Cubs fan because I lived on the North Side of Chicago when I was a kid and that’s all that I saw. My Uncle also used to live with us when I was a little girl he’s a Cubs fan. He took my sister and I to our very first Cubs game in 1983.

What were your feelings when they won the pennant?

I was absolutely elated! I cried that night and was very overwhelmed at the notion of it even happening. It was something that I had never seen in my lifetime and I was completely overjoyed!

Who is your favorite African American Cubs player of all time and why?

My favorite African American Cubs player is Andre Dawson. He was just so cool to me and represented us well.

How will you celebrate if they win the World Series?

I will definitely be at any parade that the city will have for them, and the night they win I’ll probably do a lot of screaming and crying.

Dedication, loyalty and patience are what it means to be a Cubs fan.

Why are you a Cubs fan?
I grew in the inner South Side of the city surrounded by Sox fans. I became a Cubs in 1984 when I was a member of the Jackie Robinson West Cubs little league team.

What were your feelings when they won the pennant?

I was very elated and felt satisfied with the results.

Who is your favorite African American Cubs player of all time and why?
Andre Dawson is my favorite African American Cubs player. He played with intensity and had an awesome swing!

How will you celebrate if they win the World Series?
First, I will probably cry tears of joy, after that, I plan on going to the parade.

Cory Daniels

Name: Cory Daniels, aka Headline

How long have they waited for a Cubs World Series: 40years

What does it mean to you to be a Cubs fan?
Being a Cubs fan means having pure dedication through thick and thin, good and bad times.

Why are you a Cubs fan?
I’m a Cubs fan because when my grandparents were living in New Orleans there was no team to watch on television. WGN was everywhere so they got hooked. When they moved to Chicago it never changed I would come home from school while moms and pops were at work and I was not allowed to touch the TV while the Cubs were on. So I became hooked and it’s been that way ever since.

What were your feelings when they won the pennant?
When the Cubs won the pennant, I had so many emotions. I thought of my grandparents my aunt and uncle who have all passed away. They were true blue Cubs fans.

Who is your favorite African American Cubs player of all time and why?
My favorite African American Cubs player was and always will be Shawn Dunston because of his passion for the game.

How will you celebrate if they win the World Series?
I will celebrate with plenty of Jack Daniels mixed with tears as I stand outside of Wrigley Field.

GZA is sharp with ‘Liquid Swords’ at City Winery in Chicago

GZA at City Winery – Photo credit: (Eddy ‘Precise’ Lamarre)

GZA brought himself and the spirt of the Wu to City Winery in Chicago. When you think City Winery, a certain aesthetic comes to mind. The clanking of wine glasses, jazz horns and a sultry singer paints a traditional picture of what can be expected. These days, it’s a little different. As hip hop matures, tastes change and so does the expectation of what you will see.

The band came out to introduce themselves, then the intro from GZA’s first release played. The mood was instantly changed. Lyrically, GZA is a reminder of what rap is. As he runs through his album Liquid Swords, you can feel his skill grow with every song. His wordplay is mesmerizing. The fans soak up every second only to release it in wave of love and reciting his rhymes. “It was a great show. GZA is my favorite rapper. My favorite part was when he did his acapellas. He is a great lyricist and he as great metaphors and has more substance than anyone else out there. I got my album signed too, that was the highlight of the night.” said Will K

Fans soaked up every second, some reciting his rhymes. “It was a great show. GZA is my favorite rapper. My favorite part was when he did his acapellas. He is a great lyricist and he has great metaphors and has more substance than anyone else out there. I got my album signed too; that was the highlight of the night,” said Will K.

GZA did not just stick to his discography. He managed to sneak in a few verses from his Wu-Tang brethren. To see him run effortlessly through his rhymes speaks to the bond that the Wu has and the impact they have made over the past two decades.

To say it was the party of the night is an understatement. Taraji was rocking a beautiful Egyptian Queen costume while her co-star Bryshere Grey wore his Rick James wear. The VIP area was packed to capacity, drinks flowed people danced and embodied the characters they chose to dress as. One of the most original costumes was Che “Rhymefest” Smith as Black Panther. ‘Birth of a Nation’ – I walked out feeling everything but happiness

screen-shot-2016-10-08-at-3-02-02-pm

Birth of a Nation was not going to be on my list of must see movies. I made a judgement off of emotion and loyalty to the women in my life that I would not go and see it, based on the information that was exposed about the films writer and director Nate Parker. It felt like the right thing to do. A woman committed suicide for many reasons we do not know, but this specific situation had to add to her agony. I feel for her and her family and anyone who is enduring the type of pain that would cause them to take their own life.

Ultimately as the movie moved closer to release I examined my position. I could not allow my emotion from experiencing a film that is so important to who we are. So on the same day that the first Black president was raising funds for the election down the street from Kanye’s Saint Pablo tour I decided to go and see the film with no reservations.

The film begins with a vision, The vision is placed in folklore, religion and ancestry. Nat Turner is destined for the journey that he is on. The film then becomes another slave movie, except this time you know their will be accountability on the part of those unleashing pain and suffering on anyone with Black skin. It happens and I find myself unfulfilled as if it was not enough. Watching interactions with overseers and slaves run parallel to the interactions that Black people are having in 2016. It’s eye opening, sobering and not surprising. I’m not sure what I expected. I left the theatre feeling everything but happiness. As I walked out of the doors of the Chatham theater I felt empty, angry and sad. In the background I hear murmurings of “Look at what our ancestors went through, and we still moving backwards.” The brothers I lock eyes with are speechless. What did we just watch. What are we called to do, who can we trust?

I’m glad I decided to go see the film in spite of the controversy that surrounded it. It shook up a reality inside of me. A reality that must be addressed. What are we willing to die for? Now is the time to straighten out our backs.

Nat Turner should be honored, as a man. A man who decided it was time to do something. Now, what do we do?

The cast of the VH1 show Black Ink Chicago were on a high celebrating their second season. The Old Crow Smokehouse in the River North neighborhood of Chicago was packed with cast member and supporters’ alike ready to celebrate one of the most popular reality shows on the VH1 network. Fans lined up outside the venue to get a glimpse of their favorite cast member. Once everyone made their way inside the party started. The red carpet was the center of attention for a while but one the show started eyes were glued on the many TV screen posted around the establishment.
The second season started off as a recap of the last season that ended with stories of infidelity, new loves and new business ventures. Ryan the owner of 9mag finds himself hiring new artists for the shop because, Phor is focused on his rap career, Van is in boot camp, Kat has launched her burgeoning career as an artist in to the possibility of starting her own shop, Don is having paternity issues and Charmaine is being her usual energetic self.
Chicago rapper King Louie visits 9Mag after being shot in the head and surviving. He comes to get a tattoo from Kat who he considers his guardian angel because of the Owl tattoo by his head that he says protected him during the violent encounter. When speaking with Ryan he asks for Kat and this is when Ryan discovers that Kat has set up shop in an upstairs unit that is not 9Mag. This is a cause for some tension.
All of this drama and tension was not witnessed on the night of the premier as cast members lined the red carpet taking pictures and laughing with each other. It was a night of celebration and an opportunity to watch these highly successful mellinials deal with real life problems.

Review: Solange earns her “Seat at the Table”

screen-shot-2016-10-02-at-6-20-54-pm

Solange provides a beautiful melancholy an unapologetic strength on her latest release A Seat at the Table. Solange’s writing skills are not a secret to the music industry. Her ability to create pop and R&B hits with ease has established her as one of the most desirable artists in the industry. Her most recent project is an example of her skill. A Seat at the Table  is chock-full of lush vocal and musical arrangements. The depth of the project captures a vulnerability that gives the listener an opportunity to be drawn into the ethereal vibe.

“Cranes in the Sky” a standout track from the project finds Solange trying to make peace and find solace with life’s circumstance. She says “I tried to drink it away, I tried to to put on in the air, I tried to dance it away, I tried to change it with my hair.” Any of us who breathe air have found ourselves in moments where we can’t escape the circumstance no matter what we do. Sometimes we don’t want to feel. Solange attacks this head-on and it makes her relatable and expresses her humanity.

A Seat at the Table is a raw emotion floating in the ether through an angelic voice. It addresses everything from pain, love, independence and freedom. When listening to the project you find that you will be immersed in the mind of an individual who is on a constant journey of growth and spirituality. Production by Questlove, Raphael Saadiq and Solange combine to allow the spirit of R&B to be reborn.

On the interlude “The Moment” one of the features and executive producer Master P says “We have to show the evolution of where we come from, I’m bout to send a message to the world. A Seat at the Table is Solange’s message. The project is sprinkled with life lessons and experiences from both of her parents. You can feel the project mature from the first track to the last. 2016 has been a great year for music. Add A Seat at the Table to your list of must-haves.
