Ben Gordon opens up about suicide attempt ‘ I thought about killing myself every single day’

Former NBA player Ben Gordon submitted an essay to The Players Tribune. In that essay he details the struggles he has with mental health. He also speaks to a failed suicide attempt.

In 2004 Gordon made himself eligible for the NBA draft after winning a national championship with the University of Connecticut. He was picked by the Chicago Bulls.

In 2005 Gordon won Sixth Man of the year as a rookie. His NBA career ended with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2017.

“There was a point in time where I thought about killing myself every single day for about six weeks.” Gordon wrote

He shared that in the season right after his last year in the league he would start having panic attacks.

Gordon details the feelings of despair and loss of identity he was plagued with daily. He shared that he felt as though he was in purgatory. Describing the feeling like a black cloak suffocating his soul.

When it became unbearable Gordon took matters into his own hands. “I took one of those heavyweight jump ropes — the thick rubber ones — and I tied it around my neck. Got a chair. And I hung myself, for real.” Gordon wrote.

He did not die in the attempt because in the midst of it he recognized that he wanted to live.

Gordon admits that this illness has been with him since he was a child. He was left wondering who created God since God created everything. He shared that it was a loop going on in his mind.

Gordon has since gone to therapy and appreciates being able to share his thoughts.

“It helped me work some things out. But more than anything, I think it helped me embrace the fact that — it’s like, Yo, B, you’re different. And that’s alright.” wrote Gordon

According to The National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities Among men aged 18–44 who had daily feelings of anxiety or depression, non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic men (26.4 percent) were less likely than non-Hispanic White men (45.4 percent) to have used mental health treatments.

The NIH also report that suicide is the third leading cause of death for African American males ages 15 to 24.

Gayle King and WNBA legend Lisa Leslie on “CBS This Morning” (Photo source: screenshot youtube)

Gayle King interviewed WNBA star and Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie on “CBS This Morning” about her 20 year friendship with Kobe Bryant who recently passed away with his daughter Gianna in a helicopter crash a week ago.

Leslie smiles when she talk about her friend and remembers him for the love of the game. She speaks to his fanaticism of Jordan and how that helped to shape him as a player. Leslie also touched on the idea of Gianna Bryant making it it to the WNBA. Leslie mentioned that Kobe would reach out to her and say “She got it” with regard to his daughters talent level. “She was gonna be in the WNBA” said Leslie.

The conversation then took an abrupt turn when King mentioned the legacy of Kobe and how it was complicated in light of his 2003 rape trial. Leslie was very adamant that she believes that anything that happened with that situation “didn’t happen with force”. King pressed but Leslie stood her ground.

Take a look at some of the interview in the video below.

Mahomes and the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIV during Black History Month

It has been 50 years since the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl. They can finally say they are Super Bowl Champion again in 2020 with a 31 -20 win over the San Francisco 49er’s. The 24 year-old Patrick Mahomes from Tyler Texas becomes the 3rd Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl. It’s even more sweet because it happened at the start of Black History Month. Mahomes can now add MVP and Super Bowl champion to his list of accomplishments. He is the youngest player to win MVP in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco had the momentum for most of the game but Kansas city would not be counted out. The 49er’s were winning the 3rd down conversion war until they were stopped on a crucial conversion that swung the momentum. Mahomes drove 65 yards down the field and found Damien Williams for a 5 yard touchdown reception. The 49er’s got the ball again and Garropolo got sacked. The Chiefs got the ball back and Williams closed the deal with a 31 yard touchdown.

The score is not indicative of how close the game actually was. This was definitely one for the ages. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Landon Buford on Magic Johnson the NBA playoffs without LeBron and Golden State

Landon Buford is precisemuzic’s newest sports correspondent. He has written for Forbes, USA Today and The Bleacher Report. We chopped it up with him recently about his thoughts on the NBA and the future of the league as it relates to a few teams and this years championship.

Talk about the absence of LeBron this playoff series. What does it mean for the league?

From a playoff sense, not having LeBron James in the postseason dance doesn’t help their bottom during this time of the year. However, as far as relevancy, He is still being talked about whether it is from his show The Shop, in the media, or for what he is posting on Instagram and Twitter.

What are your thoughts on Magic Johnson leaving the Lakers?

I think Magic saw the writing on the wall and decide to remove himself from the situation. He doesn’t really need the reported 10 million dollars per year salary he was getting paid by the Lakers. He is reported to have a net worth of $600 million and with Magic leaving he can participate in things that are limited to individuals that are employed by NBA teams.  That’s what he said he was missing out on when he was Lakers President of Basketball Operations.

Who do you have winning the championship this year?

I still have the Warriors three-peating. I don’t know if KD will return this season, but I still have them winning because of the core group of players such as Draymond Green, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Iggy. There is a possibility the DeMarcus Cousin could see the floor before the end of the Blazers series. So, we will have to see, but the Warriors are my pick to be the champs you have to beat the champs.

Who will win the MVP?

My pick is Giannis Antetokounmpo because he was able to lead his team to the best record in the NBA. Also, I feel he is more valuable to the Bucks due to his around game on both sides of the ball in comparison to James Harden and the Rockets. Also, James Harden won the award last year and you must have a stellar season after you win the award to be crowned back to back MVPs. There have been some exceptions with Stephen Curry and Steve Nash. Some will argue Nash should only have one and Kobe or Shaq should have been award the other one. It just based on the person‘s opinion. If you swapped Harden for Antetokounmpo, I feel the Rockets would have benefited more in comparison to Bucks and Harden in my opinion.

What teams do you think will emerge next year?

I think the Sacramento Kings are going to shock a lot of people next season. They barely missed the playoffs this season and they added veteran leadership with Harrison Barnes and Corey Brewer, who both have won championships in the past.

‘Stand Up Nigger!’

The N.F.L will now fine players who kneel during the singing of the national anthem before the start of football games. The other option is to stay in the locker room during the tribute.

We are witnessing an aggressive stance against those who wish to exercise their freedom. To participate in anything N.F.L. at this point is to look away while this passive aggressive micro aggression spits in the face of our ancestors and denies a human the right to protest in the space they are in.

No. I won’t be watching football. If you have any pigmentation or the slightest amount of common sense you wouldn’t either. This is a moment. A bunch of millionaire ‘good ol’boys’ basically told roughly 80% of their employees to “Stand Up Nigger”.

Kaepernick should never play for the NFL again

kaep

Originally posted on rollingout.com

It has been about a year since former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick started his silent protest of the national anthem due to the oppression of Black people and police brutality. The protest went unnoticed in the beginning and it didn't gain notice until the third preseason game. Since then, Kaepernick's protest has become a national conversation about racism and has ultimately cost him a job in the NFL. Players and owners alike are having conversations about whether his presence would be a major distraction to a team. In the meantime, admitted woman beaters and drunkards continue to play.

Last year, Kaepernick donated $1 million of his NFL salary. He also donated all the royalties he received from his jersey sales. One hundred thousand dollars has been donated each month for the past 10 months. He also donated 100K to Meals on Wheels and Somalia Famine Charities. In January, he donated 25K to the Center for Reproductive Rights and 25K to the Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. One look at Kaepernick's website and you will see that this year he has benefited many organizations around the country with his most recent donation of 25K going to a group out of Chicago called Assata's Daughters. Kaepernick has also started the Know Your Rights Camp, a free campaign for youth fully funded by him to help raise awareness of higher education, self-empowerment, and for training on to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios.

The fact that no team has picked up Kaepernick is not only ridiculous but gives credence to the racism that is embedded in the fabric of our country. Kaepernick is not a bum when it comes to his skill. In 2012, he stepped into a starting position with the 49ers and led them to a Super Bowl that they lost to the Ravens. He has missed the playoffs for the past three years but is fully capable of being an NFL quarterback. The backlash is unwarranted but has proven beneficial to those on the receiving end of Kaepernick's philanthropy. His protest is due to the oppression of Black people and police brutality. He is directly affecting change with his actions and for this reason, I hope he never plays in the NFL ever again. The work is with the people. This is where he should be.

In recent news, Mike Vick, a convicted felon, said Colin should cut his hair to get back in the NFL. Ray Lewis who was once charged with two counts of murder had this to say to Kaepernick "The football field is our sanctuary," Lewis posted on his Twitter account. "If you do nothing else, young man, get back on the football field and let your play speak for itself. And what you do off the field, don't let too many people know, because they gonna judge you anyway, no matter what you do, no matter if it's good or bad."

Kaepernick met with the press early on during his protest to provide an explanation for his actions:

"I'm going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me, this is something that has to change. When there's [a] significant change and I feel that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, and this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand. This stand wasn't for me. This is because I'm seeing things happen to people that don't have a voice, people that don't have a platform to talk and have their voices heard, and effect change. So I'm in the position where I can do that and I'm going to do that for people that can't.It's something that can unify this team. It's something that can unify this country. If we have these real conversations that are uncomfortable for a lot of people. If we have these conversations, there's a better understanding of where both sides are coming from. I have great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country. I have family [members], I have friends that have gone and fought for this country. And they fight for freedom, they fight for the people, they fight for liberty and justice, for everyone. That's not happening. People are dying in vain because this country isn't holding their end of the bargain up, as far as giving freedom and justice, liberty to everybody. That's something that's not happening. I've seen videos, I've seen circumstances where men and women that have been in the military have come back and been treated unjustly by the country they fought for, and have been murdered by the country they fought for, on our land. That's not right," said Kaepernick, addressing reporters at a 49ers preseason press conference.

The Chicago Cubs have broken every curse that has been placed upon them over the last 108 years. They can now call themselves World Series Champions. After 10 long fought innings against the Cleveland Indians right after a rain delay a simple grounder thrown to first base for an out shook the world. After being down 3 games to 1 they made it happen.

As a Chicagoan, a South Sider and a loyal Sox fan this win is one that can be shared with the entire city. The biggest day in Chicago baseball history has culminated into the Cubs finally becoming World Champions.

Social media is on fire, friends are texting me and the excitement is genuine and infectious. “To love the Cubs is a true love because they will kill your soul, crush your spirit and never say sorry…but the love is unconditional…because, to be a Cubs fan takes love to last…and finally….I feel like I been loved all along…it feels amazing!” said Victor R. Moore II.

Next year has finally arrived. It arrived at 11:47 local time at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The Cubs won 8-7.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement, saying:

“From Opening Day in April to a historic November night, the Cubs championship season united the city of Chicago and fans around the world behind this incredible team. The Chicago Cubs winning the World Series is about more than a game, more than a team, and more than a sport. It is about the families who have passed down a love for the Cubs from mothers and fathers to their sons and daughters, and from grandparents to grandchildren. It is about generations who have come together around radios, televisions, and within the friendly confines of Wrigley Field to root for the home team and share triumphs and defeats. Cubs fans have never given up hope that this day was possible, and this young team made it happen. Congratulations to the Ricketts family, Joe Maddon, Theo Epstein, and the players, staff, and fans who together broke the longest drought in professional sports and made history this year. Go Cubs go!”
